Creating a workout

Creating a workout requires you to have a studio. If you have not created one yet, make sure to read Creating a studio.

  1. Navigate to the Studio Manager page
  2. Tap on the "Workouts" tab
  3. Tap on "Create a new workout"
  4. Fill in the title of the workout, and select a workout type
  5. Choose the orientation of the media. This determines which way round devices are rotated when playing the workout
  6. Tap "Start building"
  7. You will then be presented with the workout builder timeline and list

The Builder

Step List

The top section of the builder is the step list. This is where the steps are listed start to finish, from top to bottom respectively, and offers an easy way to see the order in which exercises are performed during the workout as well as the detail of each step. This is also where you can edit the detail of each step.

Timeline

At the bottom of the workout builder is the timeline. This is a flexible editor for steps and media items, which supports dragging and dropping steps into order, aligning the steps with the media or vice-versa.

If you decide to add media to your workout first because you have already created a long video including the instruction of your workout, you can then use the timeline to adjust the position and length of the steps to align with the content in your video.

If you decide to plan out and add steps to your workout first, you can then move the media along the timeline to align with your steps.

You can adjust the length of steps or media items by clicking on the item, and dragging the start or end handles to the desired position. When doing so, the media monitor will show you the timestamp and the frame at which the handles are positioned to help you.

While moving steps, media clips or their handles along the timeline, you'll notice that the gestures will snap conveniently with the starts and ends of other items on the timeline, helping you keep the alignment of the items neat and accurate.

You can change the zoom of the timeline by pinching in and out.

Components of a Workout

Steps

Steps are the primary building blocks of a workout. A step can be either an exercise or a rest. With a step, you can:

  • describe for how long an exercise or activity should be done
  • describe how many reps or counts of the exercise or activity
  • indicate whether the step should auto-progress to the next one in the workout, or that the workout player should wait for the user to tap "I'm done"
  • indicate what equipment should be used while performing the step

Add a step to your workout timeline by tapping on the step items icon on the bottom toolbar. Select either a rest step, or an exercise. Fill in the details in the open step detail card, and tap "Done" when complete.

Exercises

These are attached to steps in the workout, and describe what the user should do. For example, you may want the user to do pushups for 30 seconds. You'll create the exercise "Pushups" and add that to the workout timeline as a step, adding to the step the duration "30 seconds". When the workout plays, the step with the exercise "Pushups" will display for 30 seconds.

Exercises can have descriptions as well, which can be viewed in the breakdown or even during the workout itself.

Create an exercise by tapping on the exercises icon in the bottom toolbar.

Equipment

Sometimes workouts require specific equipment like dumbbells or a yoga mat. Equipment you create in the workout will show the user what they need at the beginning of the workout, and when to use it during the workout.

You can attach equipment to the workout in two ways:

  • As "general equipment" used throughout the workout
  • As "step equipment" used for that specific step

To create an equipment item, click on the equipment icon on the bottom toolbar, and add the item.

To set the equipment item as a "general equipment" item, click on the settings icon at the top of the builder, and navigate to the "Equipment" section. Add the equipment item to the list under "General".

To set the equipment item as the equipment to use for a specific set, open the set detail in the step list, and tap "Select equipment" at the bottom of the card.

Sets

If you want to include a particular list of steps in the workout more than once, you can group the steps into a set. The set can then be added to the timeline as a "step". Sets can also be used to separate the workout's steps into named groups to add more meaning to them, such as "Warm-up", "Circuit" and "Warm-down".

Sets can be configured to repeat for a specific duration, or a specified number of times.

To create a set, tap on the set icon in the bottom toolbar. While editing a set, you'll be taken to a separate instance of the builder which will contain just the steps and other details for that step.

Media Items

Your workout can contain videos and images that are shown to the user during playback. Media are added to the timeline as media clips, and can be positioned independently or aligned with the steps.

To upload media, tap on the media icon in the bottom toolbar. Once uploaded, there will be a period of time where the media is processed on our servers. The processing may take some time. When complete, you'll be able to add the media to the timeline.

It's important that the orientation of the media matches the selection you made when you first created the workout. All media needs to either be landscape or portrait so that playback is smooth.
